when your daughter tells you she wants to be an astronaut
before there are names for jobs like that
you will never insist she get her head out of the clouds
there are plenty of women born to write clichés
who will keep her grounded

you are not one of these women

when your daughter tells you she wants to be an astronaut
you will show her the constellations in her freckles
hula hoop in Saturn's rings
you will tie her tupperware helmets
for merry-go-round simulations
and trampoline launchpads

fill her sandbox with red clay

when your daughter tells you she wants to be an astronaut
she may never discover her way through the stratosphere
nor leave frozen footprints on satellites

but she will forever know the stars
in your eyes
burning bright.
