I’M READY FOR FALL

Ugh, I am so sick of summer. I hate the heat and humidity. I hate the food. Yes, I am not a fan of summer food at all. I don't like food off the grill, macaroni or potato salad, watermelon, or any of the other foods that are considered summer. Except for strawberries, blueberries, and peaches. I love those summer fruits. I'm not a fan of the bugs either. I enjoy going to the pool and for the occasional blizzard in the summer. I also love basking in the A/C.

However, I love fall. I love everything about fall. I love it when the weather gets chilly and all the summer heat is gone. I love watching for the leaves to turn and then admiring their beauty. I love taking a drive in different neighborhoods and looking at all the trees and leaves in people's yards. It's just so neat to watch nature do its thing and look so beautiful.

I love wearing a hoodie everywhere I go because there is that slight chill in the air. I love rainy days watching the drops fall. I enjoy taking walks in that nice, crisp air. It's such a relief compared to the humidity of summer.

I love decorating our apartment for fall with pumpkins and leaves and my ceramic ghost at Halloween time. I used to love burning fall scented candles, but we can't do that anymore. I like to get fall scented hand soaps from Bath n Bodyworks and fall scented plug-ins for our outlets.

I love baking during the fall as well. I love all the flavors of the season-pumpkin, cinnamon, maple, vanilla, etc. Coffee cakes and vanilla cupcakes and pumpkin pie. I love to curl up with a piece of cake or pie and a cup of butter toffee coffee with either sweet cream or vanilla creamer. I like to go out for specialty coffee and hot chocolate also once in a while.

We also enjoy going to the orchard in the fall. We love wandering through the produce, bakery, and gift shop. Apple cider and apple cider donuts are a must have. They always have samples of roasted nuts, different apples, jellies, jams, dips, etc. I got a great tiramisu dip one year. Yum. The caramel apples and fudge always look to die for too.

I also enjoy watching fall-themed movies on the Hallmark channel. Curling up in the evenings and watching a good movie. Or reading a good book. Karen Kingsbury or Debbie Macomber anyone?

One of my other favorite things to do is plan for Halloween. I am NOT a fan at all; it's my least favorite holiday. However, my husband loves it. One year I got some window decorations and some other decor and put it around the apartment. I even made him Halloween-themed food like eyeball tacos, graveyard cups, and swamp potion. He loved it. Sometimes we'll watch old reruns of The Addams Family, The Munsters, or The Twilight Zone around that time. Whatever is on television. I can't stand horror films so those are out for me. No, thank you. I prefer the non-scary Halloween movies like It's the Great Pumpkin and Garfield's Halloween. I will say that old Halloween movies don't scare me too much. I can watch some Stephen King and not get too freaked out. However, I will always jump at Carrie no matter how many times I've seen it. Go figure.

I enjoy planning for Thanksgiving too. My cousin and her little girl usually come over, so that's always a lot of fun. I enjoy planning the menu with my mom and making the meal together. This year I want to try my hand at making a sweet potato toffee pie. We always plan a few things to do over the long weekend. Last year, we took Viv to the park and let her run off some energy. Then we went to the movies to see the new animated version of The Grinch. Viv and my mom also decorated cookies together so that was lots of fun for her.

My favorite holiday is Christmas. Yes, I'm sure you're wondering, how does that fit in with fall? Aren't you a little early? Well, no. I usually put up my Christmas tree Thanksgiving weekend or the following weekend. I have a small, black, Christmas tree that I decorate with white lights and Irish decorations. I put little silver and green balls on it and add Irish decorations like a Claddagh and a Celtic knot ornament. I love our little tree. The big tree goes up after that.

Fall is also the time to figure out the holidays. Order presents, decide what treats to make, figure out what will be for Christmas dinner. I always bake for the staff at my bank and the two veterinarians that take care of our animals. I will probably bake something for my husband's boss this year too.

Once that is all under control and presents start arriving, then it's time to wrap. I hate wrapping presents and I'm not good at it. I would rather put things in boxes and bags any day. My mom is an excellent wrapper, but it's just not my jam. I would rather bake or do something else any day.

Just talking about all this stuff gets me excited. I'm counting down until the dog days of summer are gone and fall is officially here. I can't wait for chilly weather, hoodies, the scents and tastes of fall, and the holidays. This is my favorite time of the year besides spring. I can see the leaves changing and falling, feel a touch of cool in the air, and taste a piece of coffee cake right now. I hope you have a happy, healthy fall, ya'll!
