STOPPING ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY

Shaking from the rattle
of the concrete highway and
the worn shocks on my old
Plymouth
I use the bathroom
at a rest stop

And on my way out
brush by a parked car

I turn to see
a woman sobbing
behind the windshield --
her tears and moans like drowning

Next to her, silent, her husband
drained and sheepish
his hands draped on the wheel
his eyes drifting into the distance

And
I wonder
