Long Live The King
-- At a  luncheonette in Raleigh, NC. August 17, 1977, the next day --

The office workers are drunk
and it's only 2 in the afternoon
on a Wednesday

Some called in sick
a couple finagled
a long lunch break

But juicy cheeseburgers
have gone cold
and sit uneaten on the counter

Plus the jukebox has been jimmied
until it screams --
playing the same song over and over:
"I did it my way"

High up in the corner
the TV no one can hear
tells the story:

The king is dead
Elvis is dead

NOTE: Elvis died on August 16, but many people did not hear the news until early the next morning.

This is so sad but awesome at the same time! That day must have been intense. I love Elvis and his music. Playing his songs is super fun. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks -- it was like a national mourning.
