Although I am not sure why, the reporter didn’t press charges. I was happy but also suspicious. The following week, I returned to the prison, and to Dunlap. Jake was cute as ever when I met him at the bar. Flannel shirt and jeans with his ball cap.

“You got arrested?” he said nearly spitting his beer out onto me. He tried not to laugh but his eyes did the chuckling for him.

“That reporter should not have invaded my space but I should not have punched him.”

“Well, we all make mistakes,” he said still smirking.

“You’re cute,” I said, feeling flirtatious and maybe a bit buzzed from my glass of wine.

“Not as cute as you.”

“I love you,” the words escape my mouth like a swarm of insects. I feel the urge to shove them back down my throat but that’s impossible. Jake heard me and he is looking at me. His eyes show surprise and maybe confusion but also – maybe – a little love, as well…

“I love you, too, Josephine.”

“No one calls me that.”

“I know.”

Had I known then what I know now, I think I still would have let myself fall in love with him.
