10 WRITING PROMPTS INSPIRED BY HIT SONGS

Did you know that there are people who don't like music? Not a particular type of music, no music at all. Though I'm sure there's a very good neurological explanation, it's almost unimaginable to me. I often use music to elevate my mood and my productivity. I even use it as inspiration for my writing, as my favorite musicians are ones whose songs tell a captivating story. For this list of writing prompts, I checked out Billboard's top singles for the last ten years. Even if pop music isn't your cup of tea, I hope you'll have fun dipping into these story starters inspired by hit songs. 1. Research the oldest part of your city and write a period piece based on what you learn. (Old Town Road - Lil Nas X)

2. Write a story about destiny, an experience too perfectly aligned to be coincidence. (2018 - God's Plan, Drake)

3. Tell the exciting adventure of a shape-shifting hero. (2017 - Shape of You, Ed Sheeran)

4. A young lover wakes up alone in bed. There's a note from their significant other on the pillow. (2016 - Love Yourself, Justin Bieber)

5. Write about a Saturday night escapade that results in a 911 call. "Call the police and the fireman!" (2015 - Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars)

6. Your main character starts a media company that only reports happy news. (2014 - Happy, Pharrell Williams)

7. Write about a precious item that's discovered at a thrift store. (2013 - Thrift Shop, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz)

8. Two former high school sweethearts meet unexpectedly at a weeklong company conference. (2012 - Somebody That I Used to Know, Gotye featuring Kimbra)

9. A wealthy entrepreneur hires a commerical diver to find evidence of an affair. (2011 - Rolling in the Deep, Adele)

10. A family discovers that a grandfather clock allows for time travel. (2010 - Tik Tok, Kesha)
